Warning, self promotion below! :D

A while ago I started a second account on DA, another-marble. Didn't post about it here because I wanted to see if I'd get comments and favs even without bringing a bunch of loyal watchers with me. I'm done with the experiment now, so check it out if you're interested. :) It's mostly street photography. Some examples:
Looking up by another-marble The cheetah and the boy by another-marble The hug by another-marble The cheetah strikes again by another-marble
Lurking in the shadows... by another-marble Conversation by another-marble Waiting by another-marble

On another note, I had two of my wisdom (haha, I mistyped it as "wisdoom" first, and not just once) teeth removed yesterday. If you haven't had the pleasure, there are some nice videos on YouTube about wisdom teeth extraction (like - warning, not for the faint of heart, you might find it gross - www.youtube.com/watch?v=GY459k… ). I'm drowsy from the painkillers and want to eat some real food, not just baby food that's almost liquid, but right now it's tricky enough to open my mouth wide enough to get a spoon in. Doesn't taste too good anyway, blood and disinfection agent aroma sucks. :bleh:
At least the buggers are out now, I've put it off long enough due to being a chicken. Now they are in a glass jar and I can punish them as much as I want to. :evillaugh: (But one's in pieces already, it had to be sectioned so it could be taken out more easily.)
So, that's what I've been up to. How about you?

Featuring WeirdBugLady

Mon Apr 13, 2009, 8:16 AM
Thanks to feetpeet's news article The Artisan Crafts Gallery, edition 67 I discovered the most amazing bug plushies ever. WeirdBugLady makes them, and they are so made of win I'd get them all if I could! :giggle: But see for yourself:
Sammy the silverfish 1 by WeirdBugLady giant water bug 2 by WeirdBugLady Mantis close up by WeirdBugLady Spittlebug by WeirdBugLady Antlion larvae by WeirdBugLady Motherly love by WeirdBugLady

Spittlebugs, giant water bugs, silverfish, antlion larvae...:faint:
I wish one could get more of those instead of the boring plush kitties, doggies and horses that every store sells.

Sat Feb 14, 2009, 12:10 PM
:) The wonderful FaMz is having a great contest. The aim is "to portray whatever it is that makes you smile, get all tingly inside, give you butterflies, whatever it is that brings a smile on your face". Sounds fun, doesn't it? Can't wait to see the submissions! If you want to participate, there's more info in this news article: news.deviantart.com/article/68…

Laptop is back + A friend in need

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 5, 2009, 11:12 AM
  • Listening to: R. Heinlein: Starman Jones
  • Reading: The newspaper
  • Watching: My screen
  • Drinking: Water
Got my laptop back yesterday! Haven't had much time to test it but seems to be fine. They exchanged the display, the mainboard and - oddly enough - also the DVD/CD-ROM drive (last time I checked it was working perfectly but if they think it needs exchanging, who am I to stop them?!). No I only have to wade through hundreds of e-mails (fortunately most of them spam ;)) and get everything else sorted out. Might take a while.

:star::star:Well, that's the laptop story...but there's something else too.:star::star:
hellfirediva could really use some help right now. There's a journal about the whole story and how you can help here: yamiyalodevianart.chipin.com/h…
I've got to know Tina on DA as a wonderful person - funny, inspirational and kind - and it really saddens me to see her in such a shitty situation. Maybe you could take a look at that journal and decide if you'd like to help? I know that times are tough for many, and if you can't or don't want to contribute, that's fine too, it sure is...but maybe you can spare a few $$? Would be great if you did. Every little bit helps!

Sick laptop + PHOTO CHALLENGE

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 25, 2009, 6:02 AM
  • Listening to: R. Heinlein: Starman Jones
  • Reading: The newspaper
  • Watching: My screen
  • Drinking: Water
My laptop's sick. Well, kind of. Issues with the LCD (stuck pixels), so I sent it in for repair. My boyfriend is kind enough to lend me his Eee PC in the meantime but browsing DA on its minuscule screen really isn't much fun, despite the fact that I'm used to working on a 12.1'' notebook.
Hope I'll get it back soon.

Edit: No news from the repair center yet but at least the package seems to have reached them.

:dance:Marble911's photo project:dance:

I haven't been very productive photography-wise lately. Partly because my full-time job doesn't leave me much time for hobbies, but partly also because I'm just too damn lazy to grab the camera and go out on a photo hunt. In an attempt to do something about this, my boyfriend and I have had a close look at the One Hundred Picture Challenge and the Photo Friday: Challenge Archive. We then picked 50 challenges each and combined them into our own list of 100 challenges. I'm putting this list in my journal to help me keep track of the challenges, so here it is:

marble911 has found a job

I seem to get into a habit of disappearing from DA... :giggle:

This time it's because I started a job in September. It's my first "real" one after finishing my studies and it took me a while to get used to everything but right now I'm really happy with my situation. I like the work I'm doing, the colleague I'm sharing the office with is nice, the other people I've had to deal with so far are ok too and my bank account is no longer as starved as it used to be for years. I'm still wondering where the catch is because it seems almost too good to be true. I was also extremely lucky in getting this job. They'd already given me a rejection but didn't get along well with the person they had originally given the job to. If she had been a little less ... weird, I'd never have gotten that chance!

On the downside, there isn't much time left for DA or anything else. In addition to the actual working hours it takes me about 2 and a half hours a day to get to work and back home again. For the first two weeks or so I went almost straight to bed after work  (well I did have something to eat and a shower :D). It's already getting a little easier but since I spend most of my hours at the office at the computer anyway I'd rather do something else the rest of the time. So that means even fewer photos and less time on DA than before, but a rather happy me with a life outside the PC.

I hope everyone is fine, and I'm sorry for not keeping in touch as much as I used to. I still try to read the journals and check out deviations, even when I'm not logged in, but my message centre is going crazy and it looks as if it was going to stay like that! :phew:

Art tag game - who wants a journal feature?

I copied this from :iconinsaneone: - wanna play too? Here is how it works:

The first 17 people to comment will get three thumbnails of their works featured in my journal - I get to choose which ones. The deal is, you must then post a journal and tag 17 more people as well as feature three thumbnails of my work!

So, who's in? I'll start with slot 17 and then fill them up from the bottom - makes it easier to see how many are still open. :)

Character Vs. SelfDeeply breathing in my time of shame
Trying not to show a hint my pain
I hope to win, but do I know
It's now or never, it's time to go
I charge at my opponent will all my might
I try my hardest to with this fight
Taken back into my deepest past
I can see it all, but it escapes my grasp
Letting time flow beneath my wings
As the bird of death starts to sing
One must win, and the other must fail
But neither shall enter the tombs of Hell
I open my eyes for a time
The final decision must me mine
I close them again and battle wages on
For the time of hesitation is now long gone
In a battle that cannot be sought
It can only be won and never be bought
As the battle ends, I am set free
The winner is chosen, and that winner is me
SomedaySomeday, I'll be able to sing love songs to you,
Someday, you'll giggle at how silly I can be,
Someday, we'll be snuggled up with each other,
Someday, our kisses will not be over the computer,
But someday, has yet to come, but it's not too far away,
It may be hard, being so far apart, but our love lives on,
As each day goes by, our heart get closer together,
To love and to be loved is our final goal, in this game of life
To our someday, let it be known, that it is drawing near
As others have found this love in those they have yet to meet
We know that it was fate and that we are true soul mates
Nothing else can explain what we feel deep inside
I make you laugh and blush, while you make my heart soar
So we haven't met in the real world, and others may say we're wrong
We know our feelings and we know how pure they really are
Nobody can explain the feelings we have when we imagine someday
For someday it won't matter what they say and how they feel
All that will matter is the feeling we get

Poking my head in

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 22, 2008, 8:03 AM
  • Listening to: R. Heinlein: Starman Jones
  • Reading: The newspaper
  • Watching: My screen
  • Drinking: Water
It's been a long time since my last login.
22w 4d 17h 24m 22s according to DA but now I'll probably have some time to play again. :)

So, what has everyone been up to in those 5 months?
Me, I've
- finally finished my friggin' thesis I thought I'd never get done with,
- been on vacation to Naxos, Greece with my boyfriend,
- buried my head in books to prepare for my final exams at university, and
- passed the dreaded orals yesterday. :bounce:

I missed DA, but staying away was the right thing for me. I couldn't have managed my stuff with the constant distractions of uploading photos and commenting.

I hope I can get back to a somewhat more regular presence here, but I've still got lots of other stuff to do, like cleaning up the mess that months of writing and studying have left behind, or sorting photos from my vacation. And of course I want to de-dust my camera and go out and shoot - something I haven't done in quite a while.

I'll most likely not be able to deal with all the 6,836 Deviations, 2,087 Messages, 9 Notes in my message center so I hope you won't take offense if I don't answer them all. But I will read them!

Update Feb 14
 Just poking my head in to tell you I'm OK (as requested by one of my watchers ;)). I'm still trying to concentrate on my studies, as I said I would. I appreciate all the comments, favs and notes and will answer them one day but it might take a while. I won't be online much during the following weeks either. If I log in, I tend to forget I just wanted to pay a short visit and get hooked for hours. Which is a very bad idea right now. So I try not to log in at all to avoid neglecting my work. It's what works best for me.

 Oh, and HAPPY VALENTINE'S to you all!

Jan 25
Nope, I haven't lost interest in DA all of a sudden, but I've been procrastinating way too much and too long. I really need to get my act together and write that damn paper so I can finish my studies, no matter how much I hate it. Wish me luck...I need a lot of it. And don't expect to see me around as much as before, I just can't afford that right now. I'll pop in every now and then but can't comment on everything, and I'm also way behind with the thankyous. Hope you'll understand.  :work:

Tripod or no tripod? + December favs

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 6, 2008, 8:13 AM

Marble's World

I've been thinking about buying a decent tripod for a while. I only have a very cheap, crappy one that I bought for my first compact cam and I hardly use it, partly because I'm lazy and partly because that one isn't much help anyway. The only times I actually use it is at home with the reversed lens (not having to carry it anywhere is definitely an advantage :D) or for night shots. I wonder if a good tripod would improve the sharpness and overall quality of my shots, or if I would be wasting my money. Any thoughts and comments on the matter, anyone? I'm particularly interested in the experiences of those who also take a lot of wildlife and/or macro photos, as this is my main area of interest, but appreciate any other feedback as well. Do you use a tripod? In what situations? What tripod and head(s) do you have?
My main concern is that I'll again be too lazy to lug a tripod around (I already carry way too much stuff and weight with me anyway and I'm not particularly strong) and to set it up, or that it will take the fun out of taking pictures. I just love holding the camera in my hands and being able to change position and angle quickly...
Comments are welcome on both this journal and on my tripod poll!

Hope you all survived the holidays. I did. But I haven't yet dared to check my post-Christmas weight. :D Did you get any interesting presents? And what are your plans for New Year's Eve? Anything you are really looking forward to or want to get done in 2008?

I got some really great presents this year, best of all was a small clay sculpture made by my boyfriend. I also got some sweets, money, two photography books (Michael Freeman's "The Photographer's Eye" and a German one on composition), two books on dragonflies (one photo guide and one on dragonflies in Austria, with distribution maps and info on every species we have here), a frog-shaped money pouch, "The Tale of Jeremy Fisher" by Beatrix Potter (yeah, I collect stuff with frogs), a new battery for my cell phone and a gift coupon to buy a new lamp for my room (three out of four spotlights of my current lamp are already dead).

Main plans for 2008: Finish my damn thesis and my studies, go on holiday to Naxos/Greece with BNW, get a full-time job.

Please read Kev's journal about this great but threatened project if you have the time. I'd be very grateful if you can help in any way, either with a donation or by spreading the word. Faving his news article will also help to raise awareness.

Photosbykev has a very interesting Water Droplets Project planned for 2008. Read his journal for more info, if you're interested. Maybe you can even help with some of the technical aspects? Sounds like a fun project!

hellfirediva is taking suggestions for THE macro DD 2007. Have you seen any really great macro photos that would deserve to be featured on New Year's Eve? Then make a suggestion!

Christmas is drawing nearer and nearer. I have most of the presents ready, just one more to buy and one's still on the way here by post. On the whole I'll be more than happy when the season is over. It's always so complicated to arrange when who will celebrate with whom and where, and what to get for whom. :phew:

:xmas::santa::rudolph:
I'm not really into sending out holiday cards and notes, so let me wish you HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND A WONDERFUL 2008 here in my journal. Have a great time and be safe everyone!

:sneeze: It's amazing how many diseases they've been able to cure - and the common cold is still around. And annoying the heck out of me. I'm not a particularly patient person in general (least of all with myself) and I hate how this damn thing slows me down *wants to function properly*. Anyway, I am aware that there are people with a lot more serious problems than a running nose and a mushy brain. But I still hate it, so frustrating!  :stab:

Talking about annoyances - how about Christmas? Is it something you still enjoy, or can't you wait till the season is over at last? I'm curious, so please take part in my poll, if you don't mind. :)

Just wondering if any of you read photography books to improve your understanding of the technical aspects of photography, or to derive inspiration from it. Do you think such books can help, or do you prefer to go out and shoot without bothering about "stupid theoretical stuff"?

I've made a poll about this, would be nice if you took part and commented there! Thanks. :)

Hank just made my day by sending me some of his prints, which I'd won in a fun postcard contest he'd done a while ago, along with a three-month-subscription so you might think I'm biassed :p but I'd have featured him anyway. What fascinates me most about his work, apart from the nature photographs, are the strong graphical patterns of some of his black-and-white work. I just can't stop staring at them. Check them out, you won't regret it!
