Tripod or no tripod? + December favs

I've been thinking about buying a decent tripod for a while. I only have a very cheap, crappy one that I bought for my first compact cam and I hardly use it, partly because I'm lazy and partly because that one isn't much help anyway. The only times I actually use it is at home with the reversed lens (not having to carry it anywhere is definitely an advantage ) or for night shots. I wonder if a good tripod would improve the sharpness and overall quality of my shots, or if I would be wasting my money. Any thoughts and comments on the matter, anyone? I'm particularly interested in the experiences of those who also take a lot of wildlife and/or macro photos, as this is my main area of interest, but appreciate any other feedback as well. Do you use a tripod? In what situations? What tripod and head(s) do you have?
My main concern is that I'll again be too lazy to lug a tripod around (I already carry way too much stuff and weight with me anyway and I'm not particularly strong) and to set it up, or that it will take the fun out of taking pictures. I just love holding the camera in my hands and being able to change position and angle quickly...
